Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple--she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it.
Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years--long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher. . .
Darkness Rises is the fourth book in the Immortal Guardians series, and if you haven't started this series yet you are really missing out. In fact, this series has quickly become one of my new favorites. Dianne Duvall has a very engaging style of writing and I always fly right through her books and can't wait to read more when I'm finished. Her books never disappoint me!
This book is Etienne and Krysta's story and it was really good. Although we've read a bit about Etienne in previous books, Krysta is new to this series. She is a gifted one that has been fighting vampires using her special ability (and hers is one that is pretty cool) along with her gifted brother in order to rid the streets of all vampires. Until this point she has been doing exceedingly well considering she doesn't have the immortal guardian's strength and speed, but the increase in vampires in the area recently has started to take it's toll and that is how Etienne finds her.
With Krysta's lack of knowledge of immortal guardians she initially thinks Etienne is also a vampire, so their relationship starts out rocky. Along with their story we find out more about the other characters from the previous books, so fans of the series will love finding out what their favorite characters have been up to. Personally I can't wait to find out more about Zach and the origins of Seth and the rest of the immortals, I've got ideas but I can't wait to see how much I've got right.
Although you could probably read this book as a standalone and understand basically what's going on, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning of this series because it is so worth it. There are bigger story lines going on than what you could grasp with just this one book. I've given every book in this series at least a four, if not a five, star review and they are all worth the time to read them!
